Machine Guarding OSHA’s Top 10 Violations 2018 #9

Each year, OSHA compiles a list of the top 10 most cited violations that compliance safety and health officers see on their site visits. Machine guarding, one of the top 10 most cited, is an easily forgotten safety precaution. Machine guarding prevents employees from coming in contact with incoming nip points, rotating parts, and flying chips/sparks. This can make all the difference in accident prevention related to moving machine parts.

The following aspects of the Machine Guarding standard are the most commonly cited by OSHA for the 2018 fiscal year:

  • Protection from ingoing nip points, rotating parts and flying chips and sparks 1910.212(a)(1);

  • Machine Guards must be in compliance with appropriate consensus standards and not allow any part of an employee to enter the danger zone 1910.212(a)(3)(ii);

  • Securing or anchoring fixed machines to prevent moving or walking 1910.212(b);

  • Guards must be attached to the machine or otherwise secured if this is not possible 1910.212(a)(2);

  • Special hand-tools must not allow for the employee to come into the danger zone and these tools may not be in lieu of guarding 1910.212(a)(3)(iii).

To comply with these regulations and avoid any citations, a proper machine guarding program must be implemented and regular training must be conducted.

When evaluating machine guarding always ensure that there is a safe way to attach it to the machine of interest. Any and all consensus standards relating to machine guarding must also be followed. Always be sure that your employees are sufficiently trained and instructed not to bypass any guards in your facility and report those that are not functioning properly.
