Each year, OSHA compiles a list of the top 10 most cited violations that compliance safety and health officers see on their site visits. Maintaining proper training on fall protection may seem like a daunting task, but this will ensure that your employees use their equipment correctly and avoid easy mistakes!
The following aspects of the Fall Protection Training standard are the most commonly cited by OSHA for the 2018 fiscal year:
Proper training shall be provided to all employees who may be exposed to falling hazards 1926.503(a)(1)
A written certification record of trainings that is signed by the trainer must be maintained 1926.503(b)(1)
If inadequacies in training appear, then the employee must be retrained 1926.503(c)(3).
Training must be performed by a competent person as a minimum 1926.503(a)(2)
Fall protection must actually be used and not just onsite at the facility 1926.503(a)(2)(iii).
In order to avoid these citations, a proper fall protection training program must be adhered to and regularly conducted.
When enrolling employees in a fall protection training course, always ensure that an instructor is a competent person. Regularly evaluate your employees’ knowledge of fall protection. If you have any doubts that the employee has truly retained all pertinent information from his/her training, they should be retrained. After every training session, be sure to document the attendance, have the instructor sign off on the materials and maintain this log.
