Each year, OSHA compiles a list of the top 10 most cited violations that compliance safety and health officers see on their site visits. Communication of hazards can sometimes be a difficult task, but a necessary one to ensure adequate knowledge of risks involved with a task. Hazard Communication comes in at number two on OSHA’s list!
#2 Hazard Communication
The following aspects of the Hazcom standard are the most commonly cited by OSHA for the 2018 fiscal year:
Employers shall develop, implement and maintain a written Hazcom program at each work station which describes how criteria for labels, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and employee training and information will be met 1910.1200(e)(1)
Employees shall be provided with effective information and training on hazardous chemicals in their work area and when a new chemical is introduced into the workplace 1910.1200(h)(1)
SDSs shall be easily accessible and well maintained 1910.1200(g)(8)
Employers shall have an SDS for every chemical that they use 1910.1200(g)(1)
Information regarding the physical and health hazards of a chemical shall be provided by a product identifier, words, pictures, symbols, or some combination thereof 1910.1200(f)(6)(ii).
In order to avoid these citations, maintaining an effective HazCom program is a must.
Be sure that you acquire an SDS for every new chemical brought into the facility and that it is logged in your database. Provide effective HazCom training for your employees and any chemical-specific training required per their job duties.
